New & Teen Drivers

If you are 21 years of age or older, in order to apply for a driver license in New Jersey you must pass a knowledge test and receive an examination permit, practice supervised driving for at least three months, pass the MVC road test, receive a probationary license, and hold a probationary license for at least one year. If you are at least 17 but less than 21 years of age, you must meet the same requirements, but practice supervised driving with your examination permit for at least six months, instead of three, and you cannot get your regular driver license until you are 18 years of age. If you are at least 16 years but less than 17 years of age, you must pass a knowledge test, and present proof of enrollment in a driver training course; the instructor of the driver training must purchase your student learner’s permit, which can only be activated after successful completion of the driver training course; once your student learner’s permit is activated, you must then practice supervised driving for six months, pass a road test, and turn 17 before you may receive your probationary license, which you must hold for at least one year before you may get a regular driver license.

Motorcycles

In order to operate a motorcycle in New Jersey, you must have either a motorcycle endorsement added to your driver license, or you must obtain a motorcycle license. To add an endorsement to your current license, you must be at least 17 years of age. If you under 18 years of age, you are required to successfully complete the Basic Rider Course (BRC), after which you may apply for a motorcycle permit (no knowledge exam required) and practice with the permit for at least 20 days before taking your road test and applying for your endorsement. You may avoid taking the BRC by applying for a motorcycle permit, passing a knowledge test, practicing for at least 20 days, and successfully passing the motorcycle road test once you are 18 years of age. If you do not have a driver license on which to add a motorcycle endorsement, you may follow one of two paths to obtain a motorcycle-only license. To obtain a motorcycle license by taking a BRC, you must be at least 17 years of age, apply for a motorcycle permit, pass a knowledge exam, practice for at least 6 months with the motorcycle permit, take a BRC with an approved training provider, present a BRC completion card to the MVC, pass a road test to receive a probationary motorcycle license, and ride with a probationary license for at least one year before applying for an unrestricted motorcycle license. To obtain a motorcycle license without taking completing a BRC, the process is the same, only you must be at least 18 years of age to take the road test, you do not need to present a BRC completion card to the MVC, and if you are 21 years of age or older, you must practice with a permit for only 3 months instead of 6.
